You may have dreams of achieving success but if you don’t take action then those dreams will just remain dreams. If you want to succeed at the highest level then you need to master your mind – you need to get from the back seat into the drivers seat, so to speak.
Let me give you an example. Someone may have a problem with focusing on a single task so they see a psychologist to get some advice. The psychologist tells them that they have ADHD. What is ADHD? Attention direction hyperactivity disorder. But now this person wears the label and tells their friends that they ‘have’ ADHD. Telling yourself that you ‘have’ something only makes things worse. ADHD is a label for a behaviour. ADHD is a noun – nouns are static – they don’t help you step up to the next best version of yourself.
Once you have diagnosed the problem, so to speak – the next step should be to break it down into a process that moves you towards your desired outcome. So then you ask, “how do you do the process of ADHDing yourself?”
Just about every problem can be turned from a noun into a process. Cancer for example is treated as a noun – and yet the medical profession also say that cancer is a healing process that fails to complete itself. Once you treat problems as a process then it puts you into the drivers seat. Once in the drivers seat then you have to learn to drive your own mind. And would you rather drive your own mind or have someone else drive it for you?
If you drink heavily rather than telling yourself that you ‘have’ an addiction – which is a static noun that you wear on your hat – you should be asking – “how do I do the process of drinking too much alcohol? What are the thoughts that drive the behaviour? And what are the thoughts that I need to build in so that I can cut back on the drinking and step up to the next best version of myself? And what would the next best version of myself look like, sound like and feel like?”
So now when you see someone drinking too much alcohol or coffee, gambling, eating junk food or even expressing a negative emotion like fear, anxiety, anger or depression – you should be asking yourself, “how do they do that? How do they do the process of creating the state of mind that results in the negative behaviour?”
By asking “how do you do the process” it puts you in the drivers seat and gets you thinking about the changes that need to be made in order to drive yourself in the direction that you wish to go.
Now contrast this with the participants at an AA type meeting. Each participant stands up in turn and says, “I am an alcoholic”. What they are doing is telling themself that they are an alcoholic – and whatever that means for them. From my perspective building in that identity is not a smart thing to do. It will just serve to reinforce the problem.
Step one should be to acknowledge that you have a problem but step two should be to shift your attention to the desired outcome and start thinking about the next best version of yourself and ask questions like, “What is the new me, who is free from alcohol, going to look like, sound like and feel like 2 weeks from now?” And then 6 months from now as the new me – when I look back towards today what will be the changes that I made that allowed me to transform myself? This is not rocket science – this is just understanding how to build in a structure in the mind that will help you to step up to the next best version of yourself.
Transformation occurs when you realise that you can take control of directing the cinema of your mind. Think of yourself as a film director. You write a script and then the film crew produce the film. If you don’t like any part of the film you rewrite the script and you get the film crew to film the new scenes and then edit the film. You take another look at the film – each time making corrections until you create a blockbuster video in the cinema of your mind. But you can only do this if you take on the identity of the film director and train your unconscious mind to bring thoughts to mind and words to your lips and actions to your hands that serve you at the highest level.
So let me give you the basic structure which every millionaire would understand. It starts with having a good understanding of your personality type. Roger Hamilton says that your personality type is your genius. He created a Wealth Dynamics profile which sorts people into 8 quadrants based upon their personality type. The Wealth Dynamics profile uses the driver function of the Myers Briggs personality type. I recommend that everyone take a Myers Briggs test. And if you use the Personality Hacker version of the Myers Briggs they have a car model which puts your dominant cognitive function in the drivers seat and your second function into the copilot seat. Just knowing someone’s Myers Briggs profile tells you an awful lot about them. You should also encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to take the test so that you can then compare yourself to them in terms of personality type looking for similarities and differences.
And then I would also encourage you to take Jordan Peterson’s Big 5 test. And last but not least take a look at NLP Meta Programs. These are perceptual filters which cluster together to form personality type. So to reiterate, the first thing you need to understand is your personality type. The second is your passions and interests. If you can focus in on your passions and interests then it brings congruence into your life.
The third thing is values. You need to have a clear understanding of your values hierarchies in the contexts of life, relationships and career. It is not enough to think that you intuitively know your values hierarchies – you should also sit down and do a formal elicitation and then rank the values in order of importance. And then map out the meaning around each value so that you understand at the deepest level of your being why you do what you do. And keep in mind that values determine every decision that you make.
So once you know your personality type, your passions and interests and your value systems then you need to either get yourself into an environment in which you flourish or actually build an environment in which you will flourish. This means you surround yourself 24/7 with people and activities that support you in your endeavours. It also means you stay away from negative people and activities that would serve to hold you back.
So once you get clear on who you are and what you want to do, you have to take action – and for some people this may be the most challenging part. Let me give you an example. I want to build my art business but find the marketing a challenge. So what I did was write out a note for ChatGPT.
“I am an artist - and I want to sell my art to business owners door to door - I need a script from the intro and building rapport to asking open ended questions to get the prospect to consider hiring me to create art to hang on their walls - art which can be printed on vinyl wallpaper - designs which can be printed on vinyl and stuck on the window, the door, the fridge and on t-shirts, mugs, hats, etc.”
ChatGPT then gave me a door-to-door sales script. I read the script out loud and phoned a few friends and read it to them over the phone. And then I was thinking what is the next step? In terms of systems and strategies there are next step functions. So I was thinking I needed some way to show people samples of my art. So rather than taking a physical catalogue I thought I would download the artwork from my website to my phone so that I could quickly show it to people. Once I learned how to do that I started thinking where can I find people to have a casual conversation about my artwork?
So what I would like you to understand is that in every endeavour there are lots of tiny steps. Each one of those steps can become a block or an obstacle. Some people may feel stuck and tell themselves that they don’t know what to do – or they don’t know how to do something but rather than letting that thought stop you – you should take on the mindset of the millionaire – and focus in on that obstacle – give it all your energy and look for some way to master the next step function or sidestep it altogether and find another way to move forwards. So the questions you may have in mind are, “What do I need to do? How do I do that? Who can help me learn how to do that? Where can I get some help with this? How do others do this? “ So you need to be relentless in pursuit of your goals.
Keep in mind the faster that you act the faster you will get feedback. So there needs to be a speed with which you take action – not carelessly but decisive action with awareness – and the feedback will give you useful information in how to take the next action step. And on this journey there will be a lot failure and rejection but you must not think of it as failure and rejection. Instead you should reframe it as an opportunity to learn. So throughout the day reflect upon what you have done and ask yourself, “What am I learning? What am I learning?” So as long as you relentlessly persevere towards your desired outcomes you will succeed against all odds.
