Most people think of hypnosis as the hypnotist putting the subject into a trance – and having control over them – and making them do something they would not ordinarily do – and with that comes the assumption that you need to be hypnotizable. All those frames need to be destroyed.
Let me give you the simplest form of hypnosis. You are watching television or a YouTube video and then they show you an advertisement of attractive young people having a great time. Then they flash an image of a Coke bottle on the screen. This is hypnosis. The way that it works is that you elicit a state of mind in someone by showing them pictures with a complimentary auditory track with the aim to elicit a specific state of mind. Then you associate that state of mind with something else - for example Coca Cola. This is classical conditioning. But it is not just the advertisers that use hypnosis – governments and the mainstream media have also used hypnosis for centuries to spread their lies and propaganda. So now we have millions of people who just believe what they saw on television or on YouTube or in a Hollywood film. The sad thing is that most people are in the back seat of the car so to speak with someone else at the steering wheel.
So what do we do? I don’t know about you but what I like to do is to teach people how to get into the drivers seat of their mind - and clean out all the programming that was put there by their teachers and the mainstream media and show you how to get total control over your unconscious mind so that you can step up to the next best version of yourself.
So in this video I want to share my thoughts with you about hypnosis with the aim to give you total control over your unconscious mind such that you can develop the millionaire mindset and step up to the next best version of yourself and bring your dreams into reality.
Let’s start with stage hypnosis. In stage hypnosis we have a group of people who have heard about the power of stage hypnosis. They have heard about some of the crazy things that may happen at a stage hypnosis event. And lo and behold when they go to the event they find that they behave in much the same way.
So there are two parts to this. The first is that the subject builds a belief in their mind – they give prestige and status to the hypnotist – and then the comply with everything the hypnotist says – which is basically autosuggestion.
The second part is a bit harder to explain but this is very important to understand. We all think and act using strategies. So for example you use a strategy to get dressed in the morning. You take off items of clothing and put on items of clothing in a specific sequence. Socks go on the feet before the shoes do. Once the shoes are on your feet then you can tie the shoe laces. If you had tied the laces on one shoe but then the door bell rings would you immediately walk to the door or would you finish tying the laces on the other shoe?
So the door bell interrupted your strategy for getting dressed. Another way of saying it is that it is a pattern interrupt. Pattern interrupts can cause momentary confusion as to what you are doing – and this is how stage hypnotists work. The hypnotist may reach out to the subject with a gesture to shake their hand but what the hypnotist may do is to physically side step and then reach over and take hold of the subjects wrist. In this moment of confusion the subject does not know what to do. But the hypnotist takes advantage of this interrupt and says something like, “Close your eyes, relax the muscles around the eyes until the eyes no longer work and when you are sure the eyes no longer work I want you to try and open the eyes and discover you can not.” And when the subject is not able to open their eyes the hypnotist says something to the effect, “And that means you are in a deep trance and in this trance you are now a rooster waking up in the morning, are you not? And what does a rooster do when they wake up in the morning with a barnyard of hens?” And then the subject crows like an idiot and the audience cheer him on.
So now let’s take a look at some of the world’s greatest stage hypnotists – the evangelical pastors. Some years ago I had a DVD of an American preacher who worked with a massive audience in an auditorium. I forget his name. He put people into a trance – this was clearly evident from the close up shots of their faces and then he gave specific instructions for how to write a cheque for their donation to the Church. He also did a performance where he would invite people onto stage. You could clearly see that these people were already in a deep trance with an expectation of how they should behave. As they walked onto stage and waited for their turn the preacher walked up to each person one at a time and hit them on the forehead and said something. The subject then collapsed and literally fell off the stage onto a pile of bodies.
So is it any wonder that hypnosis has gotten a bad name. A lot of people think that the hypnotist has power over the subject and makes them do something. This is not good. What we should be doing is empowering people and helping them to get from the backseat, and into the drivers seat of their mind, such that they can make behavioural change and step up to the next best version of themselves.
Another myth which needs to be dispelled is that you need to be suggestible – or that you need to be hypnotizable in order for a hypnotherapist to help you make a behavioural change. Once again it just shows a total lack of understanding of what hypnosis and what trance actually is. Everyone is open to a degree and in different contexts. First you have to give prestige or status to someone. So if you don’t give status to a doctor then it is unlikely you will follow their advice. On the other hand if you give status to the doctor then you may blindly follow their advice to your detriment.
But in terms of suggestibility everyone uses autosuggestion with themselves everyday. And when you think – you do this using questions, statements and commands. For example, “What am I going to have for lunch today?” That is a question. Then the unconscious mind displays a number of options in the cinema of your mind. Then you choose one, for example, eggs on toast. Then you give yourself a command and say, “It’s getting close to lunch time – I had better go to the kitchen and start cooking”.
If you wake up in the morning and think, “I am not feeling motivated. I have a to-do list but nothing grabs me. What am I going to do?”. These negative autosuggestions will take there toll on you. But on the other hand if you think, “I am going to get a lot done today”, then that suggestion will influence your every thought and action and you will have a great day. The key thing about a suggestion is whether you accept it or not. You have the choice to accept or reject every thought that arises in the mind. So if the thought does not serve you then reject it – if the thought does serve you then embrace it.
The one key factor that differentiates winners from losers is the mindset. So let’s start by clarifying some terminology. You are not the mind, the body or the emotions – you are the pure witnessing consciousness. You are the one who is aware of the thoughts that are in mind. You are the awareness. To simplify things you could say you have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind.
The unconscious mind is like a silent partner that will do absolutely anything that you should ask it to do, as long as you ask in the right way. The unconscious mind is the store house for all your memories. It has the responsibility for digesting your food, keeping your heart beating etc. So let’s say you learn how to touch type – that is an arduous process and the location of the keys is too much to keep in mind when you actually touch type – but the learnings are stored in the unconscious mind freeing up the consciousness to focus in on seven plus or minus two bits of information – which is the actual task at hand.
Another key point is that all thoughts arise out of the unconscious mind onto the screen of consciousness. Some people like to think they consciously think but sometimes you will hear people say that a thought arose in the mind – and that is what actually happens. For example, if I ask you to think of an animal what thought comes to mind? Did you just think of a cat or a dog – or did your unconscious mind present to you a number of pictures on the screen of consciousness from which you chose one?
So now we have clarified conscious mind, unconscious mind and consciousness aka awareness the next thing to look at is how we communicate with the unconscious mind.
When we think we do so using questions, statements and commands. For example, “What am I going to have for lunch today?” That is a question. Then the unconscious mind displays a number of options in the cinema of your mind. For example, eggs on toast, bananas and cream or avocado salad. Then you make a decision and choose the eggs on toast and say, “I am going to have eggs on toast for lunch”. That is a statement. Then when it gets close to lunch time you give yourself a command and say, “It’s getting close to lunch time – I had better go to the kitchen and start cooking”.
A lot of your thinking may be out of conscious awareness but step one to developing the winners mindset and stepping up to the next best version of yourself is to become aware of the thoughts in mind and how they affect your behaviour. If the thoughts don’t serve you then you need to command the unconscious mind to stop presenting those thoughts to you. But you also need to command the unconscious mind to present positive thoughts – that is thoughts that will serve you. Part of the process of building a communication system with the unconscious mind involves setting up ideomotor signals.
So what are ideomotor signals? When you talk to someone you will find that they are either nodding their head to indicate a “yes” or they are shaking their head to indicate a “no”. Most of the time we don’t do that consciously – it is actually a communication from the unconscious mind. Ideo is short for ideation – that is thinking – and ‘motor’ refers to muscle activity. Which gives us ‘ideomotor signalling’.
When I set up ideomotor signals with my clients I invite their unconscious mind to move a finger or thumb to indicate a “yes” signal and to move another finger or thumb to indicate a “no” signal. Then I show them how to use a hypnosis pendulum. All you really need is a “yes” signal but in the beginning it is a good idea to also have a “no”.
Once you have ideomotor signals established for a “yes” you can then ask the unconscious a wide range of questions. You can run through the list of foods that you eat and ask, “Is this food item beneficial for me? Is this food item a problem for me? To what degree is this food item beneficial for me? And to what degree is this food item a problem for me?”
And then you can ask the unconscious mind a range of investigative questions to get an idea of whether specific foods or things in your environment such as chemicals and cleaning products are associated with specific health problems. And which foods or things are helpful for healing an ailment.
Ideomotor signalling is powerful. You can also use it with questions, statements and commands to banish bad habits – such as cigarettes, marijuana, vaping, alcohol, gambling, sweet foods, chocolate, binging, etc.
So what I have tried to do in this video is to show you that hypnosis is not something that is done by a hypnotist who has control over you. You don’t need to be a clinical hypnotherapist to practise hypnosis. Hypnosis is an ongoing process that is used by every person. The mainstream media, the government and advertisers are all trying to influence you in a way that serves them. They don’t want you to understand how hypnosis works because as soon as you begin to wake up out of trance they no longer have power over you.
What I am doing is showing people like you how to get from the back seat into the drivers seat of your mind. I want to normalise hypnosis and put it back in the hands of each and every person. I want to show you how to communicate with your unconscious mind so that you can learn how to drive your car, so to speak. My aim is to empower you so that you can step up in the world. I don’t want control over people. I want to help people like you so that you can help other people to wake people up to the incredible source of power that is to be found within all of us. Then we can become free from those who try and control us.
