BE THE ACTION HERO OF YOUR OWN LIFE
I have always enjoyed good action films such as the Jason Bourne trilogy. I find that I naturally identify with the hero character, the intrigue, the strategising, the perseverance, determination and the quick call to action - and wish that I could be like this in my everyday life. So as a reminder to myself to access and mobilise the attributes of the archetypal hero that lie deep within me (and within you) I set myself the task to play act this role.

BE STRONG - YOU CAN DO IT
This is a slogan that I have used for years. I have a number of variations of this artwork in my studio as a daily reminder, an affirmation, that I can do what is required to achieve my desired outcomes. And notice that the slogan is in the form of a command. So you say to yourself, “Be Strong You Can Do It”. Just like you would if you were talking to another person.

CHARAIVETI
Life is a journey made one step at a time. Buddha told his disciples, “charaiveti, charaiveti” – keep moving, keep moving. Whatever the circumstances, the nature of existence is that you have to keep moving and as you progress through life the landscape will change.

BURLEIGH BEACH COCKATOO
It rains a lot on the Gold Coast but we also get amazing cloud formations – from black storm clouds with a bright sun shining underneath to big white puffy clouds with a blue sky in the background. Beautiful white, slightly yellow sandy beaches, river inlets, a curved coastline, hills close by and a range of magnificent wildlife.

Do not be too identified with the mind, the body or the emotions. You are the dispassionate observer – the pure witnessing consciousness. One should start by making an inquiry into your interiority – to what is beyond the cinema of your mind and the physical sense of being.

COURTSHIP
My thoughts are that the essence of flirting is hardwired into our neurology. All living creatures are driven by their sexual energy and all human societies have put systems and structures in place such as marriage and dress codes as a means to control and regulate the expression of the sexual energy. In this painting I wanted to symbolise the flirting between two weird and wonderful characters in a land far far away and free from the constraints of society.

EXPLORATION
As I work on a piece of art I often find myself thinking of all the possible variations that I could do – all with the aim to create some form of unattainable perfection. As an artist I think the exploration process is more important than the finished artwork. My hope is that this artwork will encourage the viewer to explore themself in some way or another towards the next best version of themselves.

MYSTERY OF LIFE
What gets me, is that for all the knowledge that we attain, is that we have a witnessing consciousness – that is aware that we are not the mind, the body or the emotions – that we are just a dispassionate observer – an awareness. This consciousness – this awareness of life and of being – is such a mystery. That is what I think when I look at this painting.

PATERNAL CARE
When I paint I don’t really know what it is that I plan to create. All I know is that I have a feeling and once I am able to express that feeling on paper with a pencil then I can begin the process of building a 3D structure with a fountain pen and charcoal. I then finish the rendering proccess in Photoshop.

Politics is the process of communicating to people in order to negotiate agreements between groups of people. So we have people of different political orientations with different values doing all the talking and making decisions that affect us and we the people are never really sure who is running the show.

RISE UP
If you are not succeeding at something in life then take it as an opportunity to explore the edge of your map. What is it that you are not seeing, hearing or doing? What is the identity, the attitude and the beliefs that you need to hold? What are the action steps that you need to take? And how are you going to hold yourself accountable for taking action on a daily basis?

TAKE THE FIRST STEP
The solution to procrastination is to take the first step. Even when you do not have a well-formed outcome in mind just the act of taking action on literally anything will help you to get into a flow state. Once you are moving then you can fine tune the direction in which you want to go.

TEAMWORK
This artwork reminds me of a parable that I heard years ago. There is a blind man who is fit and strong – and there is another man who has eyes with legs that are not functional. So they decide to team up – and the blind man lifts the man without legs onto his back. They are then able to walk and travel the world together. This parable is a metaphor for the heart and the mind collaborating and working in unison.
