Imposter Syndrome is comparing one's own lack of practical experience - with how one thinks an expert thinks (mind reading) - and what they can do. So you are doing a comparison where you elevate others and put yourself down.
For example, you may be a fantastic NLP Coach but think, "Oh I am nothing like Tony Robbins".
With Imposter Syndrome there is self doubt - and a feeling of not being good enough. We use the NLP Meta Model and ask, "good enough for what or good enough for whom?" Whose criteria are you referencing?
With Imposter Syndrome there is a failure to acknowledge, validate and hold yourself in awe of your achievements.
Some people have a fear of success so they don't take action towards the desired outcome. The thoughts may be, "how will I deal with success? What will my friends, family and colleagues think of me if I am a success? What will people expect of me when I am a success?" And what will I do when I am in a room of successful people? How will I interact and relate with those people? Will I be able to merge with the group or will I stand out like a sore thumb? Rather than taking it as an opportunity to develop new skills some people may not take action at all.
Some people may have a fear of failure which blocks them from taking action towards their desired outcome. The thoughts may be, "what will people think of me if they see that I have failed? How will I deal with failure? I don't want to fail so I won't take action." Once again rather than taking the 'failure' as feedback and an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and step up to the next best version of themselves some people may not take action at all.
The solution to Imposter Syndrome is to think in terms of Identity - Attitudes - Values - Beliefs and Behaviours.
What is the identity that you need? Identity is your, "I am" statements. For example, I am a NLP Coach or I am an Artist. Who are you comparing yourself to? What is the identity that you give that person? Is that the identity that you want to hold for yourself? If you held that identity would that solve the problem and would you feel good about yourself?
What do you need to see and hear which will convince you that you have the desired identity?
Example
I will use an example from my own life. From my teenage years I had an interest in art and photography. I completed a Certificate in Photography. I was one subject short of completing the Diploma because I got bored. And then I got a job as a Laboratory Technician in which half my duties were working in a photographic lab for 11 years. And then I spent years exploring different art mediums - silk screening garments, acrylic painting, pen and ink drawings, lino cuts, etc. But even though I spent half my time involved in art I never thought of myself as an artist. I found this fascinating. At some point I acknowledged my artistic ventures and I gave myself an honorary art degree but I still did not quite feel like an artist.
My studio and my garage was filled with art equipment and pieces of art. I had used Photoshop for 20 years and used a Wacom tablet for a number of years. Everywhere I looked at home I saw examples of my art. I spent half my time visiting printers to print my art and then looking for frames, and so on - and yet I still did not feel that I had the identity of an artist. But once I started printing my art at a large enough size and framing it then I got to the point where I could definitively say that, "I am now an artist". I still ask people what they think of my art but I do not care whether they like it or not because I know 100% that I have a unique art style and that the art is real good.
So in short I finally reached the stage where I had tangible results such that I could validate myself and be in awe of my artwork. So I acknowledged that I had spent my life exploring the creation of art - (this is the behaviour). And then I finally got to the point where I could see the evidence that I was an accomplished artist. This built a belief in myself that I am an artist. And with that belief my identity also evolved and I said to myself, "I am an artist". Am I convinced that I am an artist? Yes, because of my history of being involved in the world of art and because of the art that I have created. Even if I had to take a break for a while from my art I feel reassured that I could quite easily pick up where I left of. So both my convincer and reassurance strategies are fulfilled.
