Would you like to improve your debating skills? Would you like to improve your presentation skills? Would you like to influence other people and get them onside with you? In this short article I am going to summarise the four key skills you need to win a debate.
1. Rapport Skills – pace and lead.
2. Hierarchy of Ideas - logical levels and logical types.
3. The NLP Meta Model – gathering high quality information.
4. Questions, Statements and Commands.
The first skill is the art of building rapport. This is done through a process of pacing and leading key elements in the other person’s mindset and how they present themselves to the world.
The second skill is the ability to map out a conversation in your mind at varying degrees of abstraction. So this is the hierarchy of ideas model where you learn to abstract up and down with logical levels and you move to other categories at the same level of abstraction with logical types. Abstract up to gain rapport and then abstract down to discuss the details only as much as you are able to maintain rapport and then abstract up again.
Number three on our skills list is the NLP Meta Model. The NLP Meta Model gives you a way to categorise language and ask questions to gather high quality detailed information. You can also use the Inverse Meta Model to abstract up and create a trance state. The NLP Meta Model is used to bring people out of trance while the Inverse Meta Model is use to put people into trance.
And the fourth skill is the use of questions, statements and commands. Everyone talks using questions, statements and commands. What I suggest you do is to listen to what the other person says and in your mind create a visual image of the language patterns they are using – and then choose what you want to respond to and how you are going to respond.
So you don’t have to respond the way the other person wants you to respond. For example, if they make a statement and then ask you a direct question you don’t have to answer their question. Remember he who sets the frame controls the game. So if you want to dominate the conversation then you need to be in control of the framing of the conversation.
So if the person makes a statement and then asks a question you could comment on any element within the statement that they made, or any inference that comes to mind. You could also respond to the question in any way that works for you. And you could also say something to the effect, “What is it that we really need to talk about? What are we not talking about that needs to be discussed?”
The aim is to always position yourself so that you are never on the defence – you are like a Tai Chi martial artist who is able to read the body language of the opponent, and analyse their language patterns, their voice quality – that is tempo, tonality, volume, inflections and pauses. Try and get an idea of their personality type and the cognitive functions they are using and listen for any NLP Meta Programs. The aim is to have more flexibility in how to respond and communicate than the other person – in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible.
Let me give you one simple example. Let’s say someone calls you a dodo. That should be a pretty safe word to use on Youtube, if you get my drift. You could go on the defence and deny that you are a dodo or you could ask a range of questions to reframe the conversation. For example, “what do you mean by dodo? What is dodoism? What is a dodoist? Who came up with the dodoism label and why? What are the criteria for being a dodo? Can anyone be a dodo or only certain demographic groups?” Do you get the idea? So you go on the attack.
Listen attentively and critically for questions, statements and commands. Make every effort to build and manage rapport. Abstract up and down. Abstract up to gain rapport. Abstract down to get into the details. Use logical types to do comparisons and draw a metaphor. In a debate it is not so much about being right or being authentic as it is about being a linguistic martial artist and choosing your words and using your body language to win the debate. The attitude should be that no matter what the other person says or does you will win the debate.
Choose every opportunity to practise and then come back to this page and let me know what results you got – and any suggestions that you might have. And If you can share the article on social media and join me over at my Facebook Group that would be great. All the best to you.
