In this article I want to show you the power of setting an intention. To do this exercise you will need to have a goal in mind. Your intent is to achieve this goal. The next step is to write a to-do list for the next day.
So when you get up in the morning you say to yourself,. “Today I am going to have a great day. I am going to squeeze the juice from each and every moment and this is going to be the best day of my life.”
The To-Do list that you wrote the night before tells you what you need to focus on today, for example.
1. Print the business cards
2. Print the greeting cards
3. Trim and package the cards
4. Make a list of distributors
So you have your to-do list but to take action and achieve the best possible results you also need to access and mobilise both your inner and outer resources so that you can step up to the next best version of yourself – which takes us to questions, statements and commands.
We think using questions, statements and commands. For example, what am I going to do today? That is a question. I want to get the cards printed in the morning. That is a statement. Okay, get the USB stick, grab your bag and let’s get to the Print Shop asap. That is a command. The conscious use of questions, statements and commands has the power to transform your life and as such you should learn to recognise them and use them.
Now every decision you make is motivated by a value. As you know we are motivated by away-from values and towards-values. The away-from values are what we do out of necessity. We have to take action or there will be a consequence. On the other hand towards-values are about possibility – about what you believe is possible. You may find it useful to write a list of your away-from and towards-values in the context of the project that you are working on. Rank the values in order of importance and see whether they serve you or not – and if necessary install a new value into the hierarchy to act as a more effective driver in your decision making process.
So keep in mind both away-from values and towards-values. What may happen if you take action? What may happen if you don’t take action. You need to motivate yourself both with the carrot and the stick
Capability is about your ability to do something. Do you know what to do? Can you do it? If not, then do you know someone who can do it? Can you get them to do it? So are you able to do the required task?
Then we get to permission. Is it okay to take action? If you have a limiting belief or some mental block or obstacle that is holding you back would it help if you gave yourself permission to take action? So you might say, “I give myself permission to do ‘x’”. Even if you don’t know what to do – you may find it useful to take an action step which will lead you incrementally towards your desired outcome. This is the power of intention. You set an intention which drives your attention onto the task at hand such that you can focus in and concentrate.
What would be some useful beliefs to keep in mind? For example, using the example of marketing my artwork some useful beliefs could be:
1. “The shop keepers are trapped behind the counter and the conversation with me will make their day”.
2. “Success is achieved one conversation at a time”.
3. “The shop keeper is like an old friend that I have not seen in years”.
4. “The shop keepers are just waiting for me to visit them”.
And rather than keeping those thoughts in your mind you actually say them out loud – and then you give yourself a command and say something like, “You have to go visit some shop keepers and say hello, today. They are waiting for you”.
Do you see how that works? So what are the words that you need to say to yourself and to others which would help you to achieve your outcomes. Now beliefs are about functionality – so use whatever thoughts and words which will help you to get your outcome - within reason of course.
1. What specific actions do you need to do? Do you know how to do that? If not, then can you find someone to help you with that?
2. What action step can you implement this very moment?
3. If you get the sense that you need permission – then say to yourself, “I give you permission do ‘x’”.
4. Look at your to-do list and tell yourself to take action right this very moment. Just do something that will move you towards your outcome.
At the end of the day reflect back upon the day and ask yourself, “What have I learned today?” Then write down the learnings onto a piece of paper.
“How can I improve upon what I did today?” Once again write down your thoughts onto a piece of paper.
And make a note of any new beliefs or frames of mind that you could find useful - and last but not least write yourself a new to-do list for tomorrow.
Basically what you need to do is to hold a conversation with yourself using questions, statements and commands which lead you towards the achievement of your outcomes. That is, what could you say to yourself and others that would help you to get your outcomes? Listen to what others say and model out their language patterns. Write down the questions, statements and commands and then say them to self and/or others.
So you get two lists: One is a list of words that you say to yourself. The other is a list of words that you say to others. Try it out and see what happens – and let me know what you think in the comments section below – and feel free to come join me over at my Facebook Group. All the best to you.
