In this article I am going to give you some valuable insights into how you can overcome a chocolate addiction. To start with if you look at all the food charts that have been created over the years by the mainstream health departments they have never demonised sugar. That is interesting because they demonised saturated fats for 20 years - and now there is a move to shift people from an animal protein based diet to a plant based diet aka vegetarian and vegan. But sugar has never been demonised. Why not? Because many people including the health care professionals and bureaucrats are sugar addicts.
How can you tell if someone is a sugar addict? Just suggest they cut out sugar and all sweet foods for a week. They won’t do it. Instead they will rationalise that sugar is not a problem for them and that they eat sugar in moderation so sugar is not a problem. Yeah really!? But then offer them a delicious sweet food and watch their facial expression; the way their breathing changes and what they do with their eyes. It is like the eyes glaze over with an expression of ecstasy and desire. This is what a sugar addict looks like.
So now we get to chocolate. Chocolate tastes great. With just the right amount of sweetener and fat – a little chocolate is awesome. But when chocolate is something that you have to eat every day – and if you have those little chocolate bars on your desk at work – and chocolate bars in the vehicle glove box – then you are a chocolate addict.
Addictions to chocolate, cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, gambling and food all share a similar etiology. In general people are trying to suppress and medicate a negative emotion like boredom, loneliness, stress and anxiety. On the other hand they are trying to bring in a positive feeling like confidence and relaxation. In some cases they are trying to give themselves something like love or nurturance. So the bad habit has a positive intention, that is it serves them in some way. More often than not people are trying to quieten their internal dialogue – that is quieten their mind.
One aspect of the chocolate cravings is that people are addicted to the sugar. There is a switch in the brain for fats and proteins. That is, there is a limit to how much fat and protein you can eat before the taste buds switch off and you lose interest but there is no off switch for carbohydrates - which means that you can stuff yourself with sugar and carbs until you vomit – which some people do.
Those people on low fat diets and those people who skip breakfast and sometimes lunch will find that as their blood sugar levels drop that a convenience food like chocolate which provides concentrated fat and sugar will quickly give themselves some energy. And it is not so much that the body wants sugar as it wants the fat. Low fat chocolate is boring. Fat provides a lot of energy - and chocolate provides both sugar and fat.
And now we get to the chocolate itself. Good chocolate has a delicious bitter taste. In addition it contains serotonin. Serotonin is a neuro transmitter that is released into the brain when you complete a task and get that feeling of satisfaction. The beginning of any task usually starts with a struggle and then as you get into flow you start to feel better and then once the task is completed you get the feeling of satisfaction which is created by the serotonin.
So one important aspect of dealing with any addiction is understanding flow science and what it takes to get yourself into a flow state. So if you are feeling bored, lonely, listless, unfocussed and depressed then it may become challenging to face the day and work effectively. The solution which I have covered in other articles is to understand your personality type; get yourself into an environment in which you flourish, and work at an activity which interests you. The more you are passionate about the activity the better. But when people lack passion for life what many do is reach for a chocolate bar to get a quick hit of serotonin. However the feeling you get from chocolate is nothing like the feeling you get from completing a challenging task.
So rather than think in terms of having a chocolate addiction think more about – how to get from the back seat into the drivers seat of your life. If you think of yourself as a chocolate addict then you area victim – the drug, the chocolate, cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, gambling, etc controls you. This is only true if you are in the back seat.
The solution is to make a decision to get into the drivers seat of your life – and to learn how to understand the thoughts that arise in your mind and the feelings and sensations that you get in your body. And this is where NLP excels. NLP gives you tools and techniques to get inside your mind and discover how it works such that you can change your mind and behaviour. NLP shows you how to get in to the drivers seat of your mind and your life.
So think about it, what do you really want from life? At the end of the day do you feel a need to reward yourself with sweet treats, with cigarettes, drugs, alcohol or a trip to the casino? If you don’t give yourself these rewards what is your experience? Boredom, loneliness or lack of meaning?
So learn how to tap into the authentic source of confidence, love and happiness and seek your rewards from the inside. Society encourages you to look outside of yourself - they offer you products to consume. If the product does not get the desired result or has a side effect then they offer you another product. Think of the weight loss industry. It is not there to help you but instead it needs you as a motivated customer to fill their pockets.
So rather than looking outside for the solution – learn to look inside and notice how thoughts arise in the mind. You will find that if you eat chocolate that you have acted upon a thought that arose in the mind – whether that be a picture, something you said to yourself or a feeling. The solution is to change that thought process. In a couple of hours of NLP you can beat your chocolate addiction and make positive steps to becoming the best version of yourself.
