What does it mean when you feel stuck or you are unsure of what to do? It just means that you are at the edge of your map. Now we all use mental maps to navigate the world. So the strategy is to set a goal – a result that you want to get - and then start by mapping out the key milestones along that road to success.
Once you have a series of milestones in mind – that is possible destinations along the way – then the question arises – what do I do? What is the first action step? And how do I do that?
And if you feel stuck or unsure of yourself and you find it hard to take action then just imagine that you have moved into a new town. So what do you do? You put your backpack on and you go out into the street and venture a short distance. You deal with whatever happens the best that you can then you come back home to where it is safe and then reflect upon what you have learned. Each day you repeat this again and again until you become familiar with the territory. And is this not what sales people do? They doorknock house after house – or the telemarketers make phone call after phone call. They make a call and learn from that interaction then they make another call and learn from that interaction.
So no matter what environment you are in and no matter what the task is – if there is an outcome that you want to achieve then you need to set your mind to it like an explorer and take action – get feedback – learn from the feedback – update your mental map – set new tasks for yourself – and take another action step. So we have constant and never-ending action. The acronym for that is CANA. Constant and never-ending action. And then with the intention to practise and improve upon yourself throughout the day we have CANI – that is constant and never-ending improvement.
Now the more action steps that you take – and the more unfamiliar the territory then the more likely it is you will come across blocks and obstacles – and you will get negative feedback from the marketplace so to speak. So how do you deal with the negativity?
Step 1 is to look for a suitable role model and do your best to model out their mindset. Let’s use Colonel Sanders as an example – he was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Colonel Sanders started his KFC franchise at 62 years of age. He had a deep fried chicken recipe – and rather than go to the expense of opening his own restaurant he got the idea to sell his recipe to a restaurant. So he went door knocking restaurants. Now I don’t know if you have ever done cold calling – whether that be door knocking residential homes or visiting businesses or making phone calls. I tell you it is a lot of work. Most of the time the person you want to speak to is not there – and if they are then they are usually very busy and you only have 30 seconds to get their attention. And most people would end up feeling rejected and despondent – and they give up. However Colonel Sanders did not give up – he persevered and knocked on – wait for it – 1,009 doors before he found someone who was willing to work with him. And once he perfected one restaurant business he then built the franchise. He sold the franchise eleven years later for US$2.000.000.00 And it all started with a simple idea.
So if you want to be a greater success then may I suggest that you start by modelling out the identity, values, beliefs and behaviours of the high achievers – and install that mindset in yourself. If you need some help in doing that then give me a call.
So you learn to adjust your own mindset – your world view – you then set an intention to achieve a goal, you take an action step and see what results that you get. You learn from that and then you take another action step, and so on. So you become a learning machine.
And one last point. What-if you believed that conflict, adversity and negativity from others made you stronger and healthier? Would that be useful? Let’s use the analogy of physical exercise. Let’s say that you have spent the last couple of years sitting around but now you make a decision to improve your health. Is that going to be easy? Probably not – there could be a massive learning curve and a lot of pain. So if you are smart you start by going for short walks three or four times a day – and then maybe you go to a gym and learn to lift some small weights before trying to lift the larger weights. So you start small and learn as you go.
And now let’s use a boxing analogy. If you are smart you will train with other boxers at your level. And what do you learn? You learn that the punch makes you stronger. It hurts but you survive to fight another day – and as long as you take it step by step you get stronger and more skilled every day.
So stop doubting yourself – set an intention to work towards your goals and take action – constant and never-ending action. CANA and tell yourself – “be strong – you can do it”.
