People drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and marijuana, gamble, binge eat, eat chocolate and so on because they are trying to suppress a negative emotion like boredom, loneliness and anxiety. On the other hand they are trying to access a state of confidence and relaxation. In some cases it can be like they are trying to give themselves something like love or nurturance.
So the bad habit serves a positive intention - it gives you something. So what happens when you stop drinking is that you may be left with a negative feeling - a negative state of mind. And not knowing how to deal with life with a sober mind - and faced with the realism of life - you go back to drinking to hide away from the problems and challenges that life presents to you. That is a pretty harsh way of stating it but you know that this is true. So typically people will stop drinking for a while but then the negative thoughts and feelings take over and they start drinking once again.
With over 30 years of experience I have mapped out the actual structure and process's that people use to maintain an addictive behaviour. With that framework I am able to help people, like yourself, make transformative change in a short period of time - that will not cost you an arm or a leg and does not involve taking anti-depressants and booking into a rehab hospital.
So let's take a look at some of the key questions that people ask about their addiction. The wine drinker asks how to stop drinking wine? The coffee drinker asks how to stop drinking coffee? The beer drinker asks how to stop drinking beer? The guy who drinks whiskey asks how to stop drinking spirits? The coke drinker asks how to stop drinking coke? Others ask how to stop drinking soft drinks? Others ask how to stop drinking alcohol everyday?
Even though they all drink a different beverage the actual mental process's involved are identical.
When people think of drug addiction they tend to think of hard drugs like heroin, cocaine, meth, ecstasy, ice and so on - but people can be just as 'addicted' to their coffee, sugary drinks and chocolate. So what is happening inside of their mind? Everything starts with a trigger - something they see, hear or feel. Either within themself or out there in the world. Could be some negative thoughts of the past or worry about the future
That feels very uncomfortable and not knowing how to deal with that they look for a way to change the negative feeling. Beer, wine, spirits, coffee, sugary drinks, eating chocolate, placing a bet, checking their mobile phone - there are a host of activities that people can use to distract themselves from the 'pain' of the present moment and access a more positive feeling. Most people just want to stop feeling bad and feel good. Another way of putting it is that most people want to forget the past - not think about the future - and just feel peace and happiness in the present moment.
Not everyone wants to seek professional help to stop drinking. A lot of people are self referential and like to be in control of their life and make the changes by themselves. So is it possible to recover from a drinking problem on your own? Yes it is. Can you get sober without a support group? Yes you can. Can you quit drinking and never have to go back to AA again? Yes you can. And are there strategies to help you control your drinking? Yes there is. If you work your way through my website and my youtube channel you will get the information that you need to transform yourself about 80%. However if you want to make rapid long term change then you would benefit from booking a couple of sessions with me. In these sessions I will help you to clear negative emotions from the past - without you having to spend hours talking about them. And I will show you how to build a communication system with your unconscious mind using questions, statements and commands - and then invite your unconscious mind to banish the alcohol - beer, wine and spirits - or any other problem substance or behaviour from your life, once and for all. So now let's take a look at some self help strategies that you can implement to help you stop drinking alcohol today.
Do a Future Selfing Exercise. Take a big sheet of paper - a piece of paper from the fish and chip shop is ideal. Top left of the page write the words "Present State" and top right of the page write the words "Desired Outcome".
In the centre of the page at the top write "steps and stages".
Present Situation / Present State: Under the present state heading make a note of the current problems that you are experiencing.
Desired Outcome: Under the desired outcome heading make a note of your future self about 3 months in the future. This is the new you - what you will look like, sound like and feel like. Do that before you move onto step 2.
Now you use questions, statements and commands to move yourself from the present state to the desired outcome. So look at your present situation and ask relevant questions like, "How can I change that? How can I stop that? Who can I speak to?" Write down the questions and your answers.
Then look at your desired outcome and ask relevant questions like, "How do I achieve that? How do I get that? What changes do I need to make to get the desired outcome? Who can help me to achieve the desired outcome?" Write down the questions and your answers.
Then take a look at what you have written and then write down some commands, for example, "Quit drinking today. Poor the alcohol down the toilet. Do that now! Be strong: You can do it!" Take action on those commands before moving onto the next step. It is important to not get too far ahead of yourself but to use questions, statements and commands - and take immediate action - commit to that action and then at the end of the day to look back and acknowledge that you have made incremental change. As they say, "A journey of a thousand miles is made one step at a time." So be strong - take action on each step - don't procrastinate - just do it!
What I would like you to understand is that the thoughts drive the behaviour and it is the quality of your thought processes that will determine the quality of your outcomes. So what questions do you need to ask? What statements do you need to make – and what commands do you need to give to yourself such that give up drinking without having to go to a support group or attend AA Meetings?
Once you stop drinking you are going to have to face up to a new reality. It may mean that you have to change your environment and your friends. So in what type of environment would you find it easy to be a non drinker? What type of environment would bring out the best in you? Think about that for a while. In what environment would you flourish? What type of people would bring out the best in you? Think about that - write it down. It could be a challenge to change your lifestyle so tell yourself, "Be strong: you can do it!"
