(By Abby Eagle) Meaning is not inherent in an object or an event. We give it meaning - we are the meaning makers.
Let's say two people entertain the idea of going sky diving. One is terrified at the thought while the other is in a state of excited anticipation. The event in the world is the same but it is the meaning that we give to the event that determines how we feel about it.
Sometimes we hear people say, "You make me angry." Or "You make me happy." But how is possible that someone can make you feel angry or happy? If that is true then others have control over how you think and feel, and you become just a robot.
What really happens is that we take in information from the world (or our body) through our senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory). We take in that information and build an internal representation in pictures, sounds and feelings in the cinema of our mind. So we build a map of reality. We don't operate on the world directly but do so through our maps. That means if your map is impoverished you can update the map and create a new meaning for yourself that allows you to experience the world in a totally new way.
Where do we get our maps? We get them from our childhood conditioning, from parents, teachers, religion, the media, the Internet, from experiences that we have had, from reflecting back upon life, from decisions that we have made and from thinking about the future. You can't change what has happened in the past but you can change how you think about it. You don't know what will happen in the future - to a degree you can get a fair idea of what could happen but until the future becomes the present moment it is just a thought in your mind. How you think about the past and how you think about the future determines to an extent how you live your life in the present.
What life means to you in this present moment is the meaning that you give it. So what is the true meaning of life? It is whatever that you give it. If you are looking for an NLP coach please contact me using the contact form.
