GATHER INFORMATION
- Own the space. Sensory awareness. Look at the cornices. Move around.
- Eddie Izzard vs Robin Williams. Attention on self or other.
- Look at people – their dress, ethnicity, gender, physiology, voice quality, words.
- Personality type, values, meta programs, ideology.
- Stay open to information and ideas – be slow to draw conclusions.
PREPARATION
- Research the topic.
- Anticipate arguments.
- Prepare responses.
BUILD RAPPORT: PACE AND LEAD
- Sort for sameness.
- Acknowledgement.
- John made a good point and here is another way of looking at it.
- I hear what you are saying… followed by a statement that supports his argument.
- Meaningful gestures.
TYPES OF QUESTIONS
- Direct question
- Leading question
- Open ended question
HOW TO ANSWER A QUESTION?
1. The Sales Person: answer a question with a question.
2. Justin Trudeau: answer a direct question with a statement
3. That is an interesting question – and then ask a new question, make a statement and/or change the topic.
4. Why do you ask? What do you think? What do others think?
5. Comment on the statement they made before the question.
NAME CALLING / LABELS
- If someone calls you a racist, for example – and you agree or deny it then what you have done is accept the frame that they have used – and no matter what you do you are constrained by the frame. What you need to do is to take the moral high ground and set a frame which is higher than the frame that they have set and go on the attack.
- Remember he who sets the frame controls the game.
MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS
- Rapport skills – starts with acknowledgement. Pace and lead. Engage and collaborate. Repeat key words. Volume, Tonality and Tempo
- Structure and track the conversation by mapping out the language patterns.
- Framing
- Hierarchy of Ideas
- NLP Meta Model
- Inverse Meta Model (Milton Model)
- Questions, statements and commands
SKILLS TO PRACTICE
- Read a script
- Read a ‘news report’
- Tell a joke
- Debating – agreeing and disagreeing
- Answering a question
- Framing the conversation
- Hostility training
Practise three ways to do everything. Three ways to present and three ways to respond. Keep in mind the law of requisite variety. He who has the most flexibility will control the conversation.
Practise three ways to answer a direct question – three ways to answer a leading question – three ways to deal with a question that locks you into a negative frame - three ways to take the moral high ground – and three ways to deal with a heckler.
If someone makes a statement followed by a question then you have the choice to comment on the statement - or reply to the question - or talk about something else?

RECOGNISING PATTERNS
I believe that people are constrained by their language patterns and by their personality type which is a function of their neurology. By learning how to recognise the patterns of human behaviour it puts you in a position of power to be able to influence that person towards your outcome. You can also model out the language patterns and body language of charismatic people and incorporate it into your own style.
You may have noticed that people on the political Left and Right have different ways of speaking – and that you get other categories of people who use similar language patterns. Often these people share a similar accent which indicates the area where they live or the University that they went to.
Justin Trudeau for example, ask him a question and he replies with a statement which sounds like he is quoting from a policy statement on his website. And ask one of his cabinet members a question and they reply exactly the same way. Interesting!
Louis Farrakhan & Barack Obama
Louis Farrakhan and Barack Obama have a similar style. Farrakhan uses short phrases and short sentences. His use of volume, tonality, tempo, inflection, accent and pauses helps create charisma. He also turns his body to look at and speak directly to individual members of the audience. By acknowledging the individuals in the audience he builds rapport. They acknowledge him with an “amen”. He waits for their responses before he continues.
Obama has a similar style except that he talks in paragraphs and when he turns his body it is more like he is addressing a group of people in the audience rather than an individual. The more the speech sounds like the speaker is reading a script the less engaging it is. Farrakhan has more charisma than Obama.
Nigel Farage
There are a number of English people who all have a similar accent and use much the same words as Nigel Farage however Farage has more charisma because he uses volume, tonality, tempo, inflection, accent and pauses combined with well defined gestures such as head nods, and punching the air with his fist to mark out each point that he is making.
Also take note of his use of questions, statements and commands. For example, Farage makes a statement. The audience have a feeling response to what he has said but then he says, “But you know what? So now the audience move into question mode – the feeling in their body changes and they are probably a bit more open to incoming information. He then repeats the question and says, “You know what?” The audience are now wide eyed waiting to hear what he has to say – and then he makes a statement or gives a command or a suggestion. All of this of course is predicated on the level of rapport that he has with the audience.

Tucker Carlson
Tucker Carlson’s speeches in Sydney and Melbourne are worth watching. His background is as a television interviewer and he uses the same interviewing style when talking to an audience. He spends a lot of time building rapport with the audience before he makes any criticism. He acknowledges to the audience that as a visitor he should not be criticising Australia but by building rapport he is able to gradually have a discussion about whatever it is he wants to talk about. As he moves through the speech and gets into answering questions from members of the audience he now spends less time building and maintaining rapport with the interviewer because he has rapport with most of the audience.
