What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) refers to a group of symptoms such as abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea and/or constipation. IBS affects the colon/bowel. Some people with IBS may be allergic to certain foods. Some people find that their IBS started shortly after a stressful period in their lives. The nerves and muscles in the colon appear to be extra sensitive in people with IBS. Emotional stress does not cause IBS but it can make the symptoms worse.
Stress - feeling tense, anxious, irritable, angry and upset can affect the immune system as well as the colon. That is why a regular stress management program is recommended for everyone, whether they have a health problem or not.
