What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is an inability to get and maintain an erection that is hard enough for sexual penetration. It is a symptom of either a physical or emotional problem. If you get nocturnal erections; can get an erection when masturbating; can get an erection with one lover but not another; or get an erection when you start making love but then have it go down, then some of the causes are probably psychological, but a doctor should still be consulted to rule out any physical causes.
Erectile dysfunction is not the same as low libido (low sex drive) or the inability to ejaculate. A man's sex drive can be affected by stress. Premature ejaculation is different to erectile dysfunction. Sometimes the difficulty in getting and maintaining an erection is related to alcohol consumption, anxiety, stress and tiredness. One in five Australian men over forty years experience erectile problems at some time or other. One in ten are unable to get an erection. About one in ten cases is related to an emotional factor.
What are some of the psychological influences of erectile dysfunction?
When erectile dysfunction has a psychological cause it may be related to performance anxiety; that is concerns about giving pleasure to the woman. It may be related to childhood conditioning that sex is bad; sex is dirty; that you must wait until you are married to have sex; sex is not something discussed by nice people; you must not openly display sexual feelings, sexual thoughts are bad; masturbation is a sin, etc. Relationship problems can play a part in erectile dysfunction, as can worries about money and stress at work.
I received the following inquiry via email: "My husband has been diagnosed with psychological erectile dysfunction. Many test were performed to rule out physiological causes. It was suggested to us that we use hypnotherapy as a way to help with this concern of ours - could your services benefit us with this issue?"
In a frank telephone discussion with the man's wife she disclosed that both she and her husband had a strict Christian upbringing in which they were told, "Sex is bad... must wait until you are married to have sex.. sex is dirty... must not discuss sex... hide sexual feelings... sexual thoughts are bad... must not masturbate, etc." The result of this well intentioned advice was guilt, anxiety, erectile dysfunction and reduced pleasure around love making.
In some cases the problem is about what might happen when you have an erection, not about being able to get one. In this case the focus needs to shift away from the penis to that of just enjoying the sexual experience and pleasuring the woman.
Erectile dysfunction can often be traced back to an early sexual experience. For example:
Example 1. John has been going out with his teenage girlfriend for a year but they have yet to have sex because she is concerned about getting pregnant like her mother did at her young age. There has been lots of sexual tension and frustration between the two. John gets drunk one Saturday afternoon with his mates. That evening his girlfriend invites him to go for a drive. He does not really want to go but agrees. They park the car. She is concerned that he might break up with her so she starts having sex with him. John is too drunk to care. There is no foreplay, no discussion, no love making; she just pulls down her pants and says, "Do it to me." It is over in a few minutes. Thereafter, whenever he is with a new woman, or has not had sex in a while, then he finds it difficult to get an erection. He also finds it difficult to relax with a woman and allow sex to be spontaneous.
Example 2. Bill is with his teenage girlfriend. They are kissing. He ejaculates in his trousers. She pulls his trousers down and tries to ride him cow girl style. With the loss of his erection and her continued attempts to make his penis erect, he feels embarrassed and anxious about what his friends might say, if they find out. Thereafter, whenever a woman tries to ride him cow girl style he loses his erection. At other times during love making, if he does not feel in control of the situation then his erection goes down.
What treatments are available for erectile dysfunction?
Mainstream treatment offers oral medications, vacuum devices, medications which increase blood flow when they are injected into the penis, hormone therapy, prescription drugs and penile prosthetic implants.
How can NLP, hypnotherapy and meditation help overcome erectile dysfunction?
If the causes are psychological then NLP and hypnotherapy can be used to help deal with stress, anxiety and relationship conflict, and to build in new feelings of confidence. Meditation has been found to be one of the most cost effective treatments for anxiety. Regular meditation practise is effective for relaxing both mind and body, and has been shown to have a beneficial affect upon the health of the body.
In the case examples with John and Bill above, the procedure was to clear the negative emotions from all the significant emotional sexual events. And then to access a powerful resource state and then anchor that resource state in to future events such that they would find themselves becoming more confident day by day, with feelings of power and strength growing, becoming stronger and lasting into the future.
